Donating My Car (to a Veterans Charity) what to expect?

26 Jul

6.29.2010 (tuesday)

I’m moving out of state for school and i won’t be needing a car so i decided to donate it to The National Veterans Service Fund Vehicle Donation Program.

They are scheduled to pick up the car on thursday.
I already know that i have to surrender my plates (i’ll do that tomorrow) to the MVC
and i know that i have to give the car title to the tow company:

1. Do i have to sign over the title or leave it blank?
2. Am i supposed to get any paperwork from the charity as proof that the car was donated?
I read that they send you info once the car has been sold.
3. Is there anything else i should know/expect during this process?

thanks in advance! :)

What’s up with the new tax rules for donating household items to charity?

09 Jun

If it’s not in good condition it won’t count as a tax deduction . I thought charities like Goodwill and Salvation Army used to say they put people to work fixing your old chair or whatever , when soliciting for donations . Not that I would donate trash- but does this mean an article in “reasonably” good condition will not be accepted ?

We are donating some of our product to a charity. Should we record a 0 cost for this portion of the product?

30 May

Should we record a 0 cost or how do we account for it? I know we will get a certificate from the charity saying we donated and this is for tax purposes.
would i receive it into inventory as usual and then pay the bill. then do a journal entry debiting charitable donations and crediting inventory?

Is it bad to lie about donating profits to charity even if you don’t on eBay?

24 May

One of my friends is going to list something on eBay. He told me that he is going to lie and say that the money will go to charity even when it won’t. He said that people will pay more for it. I think that it seems a little wrong to do that, but what do you guys think?

How does donating clothing to charity for a tax break work?

20 May

I cleaned out closets this fall and took several bags of clothes to Goodwill. They gave me a receipt for my taxes. I was just wondering how that works since all that was on the paper was the date I donated, not what or how much. Do I just write down everything I donated and estimate the value it was worth? Most of the clothes were in new condition so do I value them at new price or used? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

When in the history did US tax system allow tax deductions for donating to charity?

20 May

I tried researching this however it was difficult to find when the deduction for the purpose of donation began. I know that the 1870s is when some deductions in general were allowed.

All answers are greatly appreciated. THANKS TO Everyone who answers!

If you were going to start donating to a charity, which one would you choose and why?

18 May

I make it my yearly New Year’s resolution to start a new direct debit for a charity, but this year I’m struggling to think of which one to go with.

So far, I do Oxfam, Amnesty International, NSPCC and Refuge.

Which one should I add, and why?
