Do you feel it’s ridiculous when people ask for your money to help support a cause, during times like these?

05 Jun

A quick note -
A week ago I was laid off along with 30 other employees from our job where we made the frames for toyota. They said due to the economy they can no longer afford to keep us working. -

I received my electric bill, which of course was ridiculously high, not due to my using energy but to all the taxes they include with the bill…
City tax
County tax
School tax
and of course there’s the service fee, even though I have to read my own meters when its bill time….
Then there’s the gas bill, sanitation bill, rent, insurance, groceries, every day necessities, gas for the car…….

Were busting our humps, and they have the nerve to add on our bill a line that says “I would like to donate “x amount of dollars” to charity.” What do they think were made out of? and if that wasn’t enough they give us an envelope to send our money to them, with a “place stamp here’ So all those bills plus the cost of stamps, which these days are ridiculously high.

Does this bother anyone else?.. Can anyone else see how screwed up the world is? Or am I just being a bad person for being annoyed that I’m being asked to support strangers when I’m having trouble supporting my own family?

why is it city people have to pay both city and county taxes, yet county people only have to pay for county? or is that just here?

We need good ideas for fund raising. we are polar plungers and it’s hard to get people to donate?

28 May

My daughter and I have been Polar Plunging for 3[ her] and 4[me] years now.We have not been very lucky at getting people to donate. It seems to be a hard charity to get people to donate to. We have talked to people at church, school and friends and family. Now we have a web page and thought that would work, but not really.Any ideas to help us would be great. We thought about a bake sale, can’t really do a car wash because it’s just the 2 of us.I need some good answers!!!! thanks !!! check out our web page!!!!! http://www.firstgiving.com/deniseandjasmin
Special Olympics is who we are polar plunging for.
The Polar Plung is when thousands of people go running into the freezing ocean with bathing suits on.This year it’s in Feb.Some People dress up in costumes for contest as my daughter and will be doing this year. You never know how cold it’s going to be outside but the ocean temp. is usually around 32.If you ckick on my link you can learn all about it.
This will take place in Virginia Beach Va.

Do you think it’s appropriate?

07 Apr

for a church to send people out onto a busy intersection with buckets to collect money for needy families?

Would you give money to them? Or would you tithe through your own church or make a personal donation yourself to your ocal welcome house?

I saw this the other day, and a very “homey” looking woman came up to my car and knocked on my window to ask for money, showing me her labeled bucket.

My church doesn’t do this type of thing, and I’ve never heard of one that does. Usually we collect and give as a church through fundraisers or personal donations.

Why is our country so negligent when it comes to dealing with it’s own problems?

29 Mar

Don’t get me wrong…I wholeheartedly support helping those in need when a crisis occurs. I know that Haiti is in a dire situation and this is just the beginning for them. There is going to be a long process of clean up and rebuilding and a lot of people will be without homes for a while.

I’m also not going to say that I disagree with setting up a venue to raise money for supplies and assistance of those in need due to this crisis. I heard on the radio today that CNN raised $7.2 million in a few hours yesterday doing a telethon. That’s wonderful and an exciting development for this cause.

Here is my “problem” if you will. We have thousands of people right here in America that don’t have jobs, housing, food, health care…and we’re doing what?? I don’t remember seeing any grand gestures being made to the benefit of all of the people who lost their jobs in the last year. I don’t recall a telethon or other fund raiser occuring to assist the single mothers of America that have to work 3 jobs to make ends meet while someone else raises their children. I have yet to see Branjelina donate a million dollars to assist the people who lost their home to foreclosure or had their car repossessed when they could no longer pay their bills because of the ignorance of the people who run this country.

My point isn’t to compare the two things because they are different. I’m not asking anyone to justify to me why we are doing what we’re doing for Haiti. I know why, and I agree. What I don’t understand and what I would LOVE for someone to explain to me is why we are so quick to run off and help everyone else yet we aren’t cleaning up the mess in our own backyard. Instead, America lowers the blinds and pulls the curtains nice and tight. As long as it is ignored and we don’t talk about it then we don’t have to do anything about it.

I see the past presidents walking off the plane in Port au Prince, smiling and waving to the cameras. Hilary Clinton talking about how the assistance will continue and that “we’re here to help”. It makes me want to smack all of them upside the head and say “WAKE UP!! This is great and all, but what are you going to do when you get home??” I have a feeling the answer would be, “…uuuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhh…”

Do you think it’s fair for the govt. to cite numbers they won’t let anyone else see?? (cash for clunker sales)?

29 Mar

It’s one thing to release the complete sales numbers for the Cash for Clunkers program and then claim people overwhelming bought “green” vehicles. But it’s another thing entirely to make that claim and then deny the Associated Press the actual numbers since July 31.

What do you think??

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090813/ap_on_bi_ge/us_clunkers_not_so_green;_ylt=Arpc9IGWR1MU3.lRoOPKYSCyFz4D;_ylu=X3oDMTJsZzI0cGtrBGFzc2V0A2FwLzIwMDkwODEzL3VzX2NsdW5rZXJzX25vdF9zb19ncmVlbgRwb3MDNQRzZWMDeW5fbW9zdF9wb3B1bGFyBHNsawNzcGlubWV0ZXIzYmk-

WASHINGTON – Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, the nation’s top car salesman in recent weeks, has cited the Obama administration’s best-seller list of mostly smaller, fuel-saving cars like the Ford Focus to describe the success of the Cash for Clunkers rebate program.

But what LaHood and other administration officials usually don’t mention is that some trucks and sport-utility vehicles that get less than 20 miles per gallon, like the Ford F-150 truck and one version of the Cadillac SRX Crossover, also are being purchased with the new government subsidies. Both are bulky vehicles weighing more than 6,000 pounds when loaded that boast at least 248 horsepower.

Just how many consumers used the federal rebates to buy these larger, not-so-green vehicles is unclear. The Obama administration has declined so far to release detailed records of purchases under the program being compiled by the Transportation Department, listing every clunker deal requesting rebates. The Associated Press requested the data July 31.

I donated my vehicle because it’s a very old car and it doesn’t run anymore. It’s a 97 Pontiac?

25 Mar

Grand Am. I just talked to my brother, and he said that his wife’s family from another country just recently came to live here in the U.S. and he’s a mechanic, and he could have fixed the car for $500.00. It’s a blown head gasket, and the mechanic that I was dealing with said it would cost $1,000.00 to fix. I figured that I didn’t want to put anymore money into the vehicle, so I decided to donate it. I just talked to my brother yesterday after already donating the car, and now he tells me that this uncle of his wife’s just recently moved here in the U.S. and that he doesn’t have anything here, and that he probably could have fixed the car himself since he is a mechanic and so I guess I could have just given the vehicle to him, and I didn’t even think about that. I just donated it. So, what I am saying is that I am feeling a little guilty about donating it now instead of giving it to someone in the family who I know that could use it. What do you think?

What is the name of the song (I believe it’s by Blue Oyster Cult) about the woman needing a heart transplant?

24 Mar

I thought the name was something like “Goodbye Love.” The man is visiting her in the hospital. He leaves and gets into a car crash, and they use his heart for the surgery. I remember the refrain, “We have a donor…Prep him! Prep him!
I just finished watching Seven Pounds and thought of this song. I won’t be able to sleep until I figure this one out.

Did you know when you donate your car, the gov’t legally takes over your computer, for it’s own purposes?

Selling / Donating My Car – I need to but it’s hard to let go!?

04 Mar

Since August 2008, my 93 Plymouth Acclaim has been sitting in my apartment parking lot. According to the mechanics, I need a new transmission and work on the cooling system (estimated at $2000).

Obviously, it’s not worth it to repair, but it’s really hard for me to let it go because the engine runs extremely well and I did have many repairs done prior to these major problems. Last time I checked I could get $50 bucks for it from “junkmycar.com”… and I doubt anyone would want to buy my car around town. So I’m thinking about donating it, but only if I can find a 100% reputable charity AND one that would want my car even in it’s condition. I’m a college student with lots of bills to pay so if I could get a couple hundred bucks for it somewhere I’d choose that option, otherwise I’d rather donate it…

Can anyone advise me on this? Thanks!!

Which charities will accept the donation of a vehicle? It’s not a great vehicle but it has life left in it.?

23 Feb

I want to get it out of my driveway this month. Occasionally I see a request for auto donations from the Purple Heart, but I’d prefer to donate to a medical charity if possible.
